“Play” is Not a Four Letter Word

If you’ve ever watched a kid play, you’ll notice something magical. They can turn a cardboard box into a spaceship, a blanket into a superhero cape, and a handful of glitter into… well, pure chaos. But here’s the thing: that unbridled creativity doesn’t have to vanish when we grow up.  As an adult, diving into playful activities can deepen social connections, decrease stress, improve problem solving skills, and is a balm for your overall mental health. Play allows us to be present in the moment of joy and fulfillment.

Creativity - the ability to produce original and unusual ideas, or to make something new or imaginative.

Play- Play is the state of mind that one has when absorbed in an activity that provides enjoyment and a suspension of sense of time. And play is self-motivated so you want to do it again and again.

Play breaks down when people become self-conscious about making mistakes, start to compete or compare, become hostile, seek power, or start justifying actions.  If you want to be a creative person then you need to allow yourself permission to enter a state of play.  Somewhere along the way, “playing” got a bad rap as being frivolous, lazy, a waste of time. Adults aren’t supposed to play, right? We’re supposed to work, be serious, responsible, and organized! Honestly, that is absolute utter nonsense.

At The Fabric Foundry, we firmly believe that playtime isn’t just for kids. Whether you’re quilting your heart out, designing a dress, or just joyfully hoarding fabric (because who doesn’t?).  Embracing your inner child is key to unlocking your creativity. In upcoming blogs let’s dive into what it means to keep playing, why it matters, and how to make sure your “inner kid” always has a seat at the creative table.

Come forge your creative path with us!
